The Earth: The purpose of this task is to consider the shape of the Earth, where we live on it and of objects falling down towards the Earth.
On Earth, objects do not just fall 'down', they fall towards the centre of the Earth. Gravity is a property shared by all objects - including a beam of light.
Everyone knows the phrase 'What goes up must come down', but the goal of a good educator is to explain phenomenon in terms of principles that go beyond a single phenomenon - instead, to provide an understanding that is capable of generalisation in a deep and consistent manner.
A student's conception of gravity must grow in sophistication to the point that it becomes more than a mere name associated with 'falling'. Gravity must be understood in terms of its cause, its source, and its far-reaching implications on the structure and the motion of the objects in the universe.
