UNDERSTANDING SOUND (Waves, Vibration) QUIZ:
THIS IS A QUIZ - IT IS NOT A TEST
The purpose of the QUIZ is to encourage students to research answers for themselves and then have an opportunity to get guidance from their friends and from their teacher.
Questions are designed to encourage students to:
Explore and describe sound and the motion of sound waves
Explore and describe effect of sound on an object
Identify and describe the source of sounds from various objects
Explore identify and describe the the difference between sounds from various objects
Experiment and observe the effect that objects have on sound
Ask BIG questions
Concepts such as vibration, waves, frequency & pitch are explained:
Vibration (for sound) is a moving back and forth of particles about a point of equilibrium. If this motion causes a transmitting medium to vibrate, this vibration may transmit sound waves to the ear and to the brain.
Frequency is the rate at which the source produces sound waves, i.e. complete cycles of high and low pressure regions. In other words, frequency is the number of times per second that a vibrating body completes one cycle of motion.
Pitch is a sound whose frequency is clear and stable enough to be heard. The pitch is determined mostly by frequency and is usually identified with it (it depends in a small degree, on the sound level and the auditory system but (to avoid confusion), these differences are often ignored when discussing answers to quiz questions presented here).
Frequency: Low pitched or bass sounds have low frequencies. High-pitched or treble sounds have high frequencies.
Sound is another name for some types of vibration. Not all vibrations result in sounds
Getting Started:
At the end of this section you will find a link to an on-line QUIZ.
When starting out, students are NOT expected to be able to answer many of the QUIZ questions correctly - if any at all.
As the course progresses and knowledge increases, students will have additional opportunities to test their new understanding about each of the questions.
Parents and teachers may point students to related information; do not tell them the answers.
Please read the next few lines before you try the QUIZ:
For each question, there is one or more on-line videos that you should watch that will help you understand the question better and will help you select the correct answers.
Many of the questions include 'interactive' and/or
'simulator' software.
After you have worked through the questions, videos and simulators, attempt the QUIZ again (you may attempt the QUIZ as many times as you like).
If you do get any answers wrong, then check out the videos and interactives and ask your friends and teachers for help.
Do the videos or ideas that they raise give you any ideas about experiments that you would like to try yourself?
If you find any interesting videos or links, make a note of them so that you can share them in class,
Make a note in the DISCUSSION sections for questions that you would like to discuss or that you would like answered in class.
Before you start, take some time out, to consider the video(s) about sound:
Video 1. What is sound and how is sound transmitted?
Video 2. Cymatics - Having fun with art & science
